History of Buckhead

Buckhead was established after Henry Irby purchased more than 200 acres of land in 1838 for a measly $650. He opened a tavern and supplies store in the area and called it Irbyville, after his surname. Soon it became a welcome stop for travelers passing through.

According to legend, Irby shot a buck and mounted its head on a post that was visible to passersby. Soon, people were referring to the place as “the buck’s head” instead of Irbyville.

Wealthy Atlantans started building homes in Buckhead in the 1920s, some of which still stand today. After the community was annexed to Atlanta in 1952, development came at a faster pace which shaped Buckhead into the stylish district we know today.
