Druid Hills is a census-designated place (CDP) and a suburban neighborhood located in DeKalb County. It is generally considered a part of Atlanta’s East Side district, approximately 4 to 5 miles away from Downtown Atlanta.
 
Due to the presence of Emory University in the community, Druid Hills is also informally known as Emory. Other “Emorys” located in the neighborhood include Emory Village, a commercial district dating back to the 1920s, and Emory Grove, a historic district that features bungalow homes from the 1940s.
 
Druid Hills is recognized as one of Atlanta’s most affluent neighborhoods. It remains one of the most coveted addresses in Metro Atlanta.
 

History of Druid Hills / Emory

Druid Hills is the realization of developer Joel Hurt’s lofty vision – to create the “perfect suburb.” To turn this dream into reality, Hurt tapped the services of renowned landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted. With support from other notable Atlanta residents (including Coca-Cola’s Asa Candler), the verdant neighborhood of Druid Hills was born.
 
Hailed as the father American landscape architecture, Olmsted previously designed New York City’s Central Park, the Stanford University campus, and the grounds of the United States Capitol. Druid Hills is both Hurt and Olmsted’s second collaboration and Atlanta’s second suburb, following the creation of Inman Park in 1889.
