History of Decatur

Decatur was first settled in the 1820s, as farmers and tradesmen of English, Irish, and Scottish descent migrated from other parts of Georgia, Virginia, and the Carolinas. In 1823, the City of Decatur was officially incorporated, taking its name from the 18th-century American naval hero, Commodore Stephen Decatur.

From its humble beginnings as a sparsely populated, rural community, Decatur became the commercial center of DeKalb County in the mid-to-late 1800s. Residential development began near railroad stations, where early residents preferred the convenience of living close to the primary means of transportation.

By the early 1900s, the increased popularity and availability of cars enabled home buyers to choose residences farther away from railroad areas. This spurred the development of “garden suburb” communities, where properties occupy larger lots. With more homes offering generous front and back yard space, Decatur became an even more attractive place to live.
